Neighbouring in the Inner City

Oxford Terrace Housing Community is a collection of homes in Inner City East Christchurch where neighbours connect and foster a sense of community together.

HISTORY

After the 2011 earthquakes Oxford Terrace Baptist Church reimagined what could be built on the land. The church decided to build spaces where people could live, work and worship.

Warm apartments have been included with the intention of fostering a sense of community in the central city between neighbours.

COMMUNITY FOCUS

Oxford Terrace Housing Community is a safe, welcoming place to live for people big and small. Each household has its own private dwelling but can also connect with neighbours out in the shared garden, or by joining in regular pot-luck meals.

A car free site means a safe place for tamariki (children) to play, and a large common garden for neighbours to enjoy. Neighbours can also enjoy the benefits of living in the Central City with Margaret Mahy playground, Tūranga library, Hagley Park, and retails stores, all within walking distance.

HOUSING

There are 14 apartments on site, including 5x two-bedroom (3x accessible units), 6x four-bedroom, and 3x five-bedroom units. There is one onsite accessible car park, otherwise, offsite parking is available for lease. Half of the apartments are allocated for applicants on the social housing register. The rest are intended for family housing or rent by the room accommodation for first year students and young adults.

SHARED FACILITIES

Common facilities include a central courtyard, vegetable garden and orchard, access to the community hall, and bike and storage sheds. There is the opportunity to access free community internet and below-market-rate power.
